Open Studio

Weekly Open Studio

A relaxed weekly studio for exploring mixed media, drawing, painting and printmaking. Develop your artistic eye while experimenting with a range of materials and creative approaches in a relaxed, supportive studio environment. Each week explores a different way artists use when creating artwork — from observation and tone to colour and composition. Using printmaking, paint and mixed media — through simple guided exercises and studio projects.

Dates: Weds 15th April to Weds 20th April

Each session begins with a short introduction and warm-up exercise, followed by time to work on a project and develop your own ideas. Guidance is available throughout, but there is plenty of space to explore and work at your own pace.

No previous experience is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

Who is it suitable for?

Suitable for complete beginners as well as those who already enjoy being creative and would like to explore new materials, try different approaches or develop their practice.

What we’ll explore

Week 1 (Weds 15th April) – Seeing Like an Artist

Using graphite stick and pencil to slow down and really observe a subject, learning how artists choose what to draw and what to leave out.

Week 2 (Weds 22nd April) – Creating Depth with Light and Shadow

Working with charcoal and white chalk on toned paper to explore how light and shadow create form and depth.

Week 3 (Weds 29th April) – Colour That Works Together

Using gouache or acrylic to explore colour relationships and how complementary colours can create harmony in an artwork.

Week 4 (Weds 6th May) – Why Some Artworks Work

Exploring how artists organise shapes, space and colour so an artwork feels balanced and engaging. We’ll look at practical composition tools including viewfinders and notan — the balance of light and dark shapes.

Week 5 (Weds 13th May) – Brushwork and mark making

Exploring how different materials make marks and how to use your different brushes.

Week 6 (Weds 20th May) – Loosening Up: Gel Plates & Mixed Media

Experiment with gel plate printing, image transfer and layered materials to create dynamic, expressive work.

A relaxed and supportive studio

Many people join simply because they’d like time to make artwork regularly and explore different approaches in a friendly studio environment.
